The article also uses the term "slave" for the status of the rescued castaways, which might have been technically correct or not IDK, but definitely carries a lot of connotations that are just not supported by the evidence, which is that the First Nations people rescued the sailors, nursed them back to health, and otherwise treated them reasonably well, even if they did not allow them liberty. "Captives" seemed like a better word choice.
